Save a Life, Adopt a Pet!

Bringing a new pet into your home is a big decision, especially if you already have one at home. Will they get along? Will the pet you adopt like living with you? Will your lifestyles match up?

It's a good idea to sit down and think about what you're looking for in a new friend long before you start looking. You might even want to contact your local shelter or rescue group to ask about fostering. Fostering is a great way to find a pet that fits in perfectly at your home. Kyla and Stitch, my two dogs in the picture to the right were both foster dogs, and they get along wonderfully with eachother and my 3 cats!

Ask your self a few questions like these:
    1. Do I have time for a new pet?
    2. How much time do I have? Do I want to take my new friend for 4-5 walks a day or 2-3? Young puppies or adolescents with under developed bladders can require up to 10 walks a day! Puppies are cute, but they're a lot of work...Am I ready?
    3. What kind of pet do I want? Dog or Cat? What breed? Mixed? Purebred? Small or Large? Small doesn't necessarily mean easy. Some breeds would love nothing more than to lounge around and sleep all day, while others need lots of exercise.
    4. Is everyone in my household committed to owning a pet? Dogs can live to be 14+ years old, and cats 20+. Where will I be?
    5. Where will my new friend sleep? In my bed? Where ever he wants? In their own bed?

If you decide to adopt from a breeder do your research and save yourself lots of time, money, and possible heartache in the long run. Some breeders are just out to make money and are not concerned about the health or quality of the pets they are breeding. Beware of Puppy Mills, and pet stores. Talk to your vet about reputable breeders in your area.

Try and find a new pet that fits in with your lifestyle instead of falling for the first adorable little guy you come across. Both you and your new pet will be happier in the long run.
